Zambujeira do Mar: One of Portugal’s Hidden Gems

Hi C,

That swing in Amsterdam looks insane!! I’d love to experience it but I feel like I would never have the courage hahaha. Ever since I was a little girl, I went to Zambujeira do Mar, about a three hour drive from Lisbon,  every year with my grandparents as my family has a house there. Sadly, I hadn’t been able to go during the past five years so it made it all that much more special when I was able to go this year. I went with my cousin and my grandparents for five days and it was amazing. I love spending quality time with my family and that’s exactly what we did. I’d have to say that the highlight of the trip (besides spending time with my family) was seeing the breathtaking sunsets. One of the nights was one of, if not, the best sunset I have seen in all of 2017.

The special thing about Zambujeira do Mar is that no matter where you go, you get incredible views. It’s a great place to go to the beach, eat delicious food and go to bars. If you like to be adventurous, there are a few places that you can hike to get magical views. Luckily for me, my cousin is really into fitness so we were able to see some really incredible spots. I’ll admit that I was really nervous because I was scared to fall off the cliffs while we were climbing haha. That would have been less than ideal!

One of the great things about the destination is that you can pretty much walk anywhere. The streets are pretty steep and not very fun to drive in so usually you just find a good parking spot close to where you are staying and don’t move the car until you leave a few days later. There are a lot of shops to buy souvenirs and traditional clothing/towels. A lot of the shops, restaurants and bars are family-owned and everyone is very nice and friendly. I recommend the restaurant Mira Mar because the food is amazing but the service is very slow and it takes forever to get the food. We were all getting pretty hangry (hungry + angry.. clever I know haha).

We went to get a coffee at Restaurant Pizzeria Casino da Ursa every day. Make sure you make reservations when you can because the restaurants aren’t very big and get full pretty fast. There are multiple bars and they are all very close to each other so it’s popular to just go bar hopping around the destination. It’s not a very big place so you’ll usually see some of the same people at the beach, restaurants and during nightlife.

There are so many amazing places to visit in Portugal but Zambujeira do Mar is one of the destinations that is the least known to foreigners and it’s a place that I greatly recommend!

Love you!

– K
